Nicholas Vass is originally from Glenview, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. He graduated from Vanderbilt University in 2010 with a degree in mechanical engineering and a minor in materials science. He chose to continue with his master's degree at Georgia Tech. In his free time, he enjoys reading, playing guitar, playing sports, and volunteering.
Nick's research interests focus on developing new technologies for systems, specifically in defense-oriented projects. His grand challenge project is centered around evalutaing counters and countermeasures for directed energy weapons, such as lasers and RF threats. He is also currently working on the NASA ERA project for his sponsored research, helping develop future aircraft systems.

Awards and Honors
Nick was a member of Vanderbilt's NASA USLI team, which won several awards, including Best Payload Design and Best Web Design. Nick's team also won the school's Senior Design Award, and was a recipient of a Special Award from the AIAA Tennessee Section.
