The CoDE became operational in July 2005. Room remodeling and the initial set of equipment described below was funded from in-house sources.

Computers

The CoDE is equipped with seven desktop PCs running Windows XP Professional. These PCs are connected to the ASDL network. The six computers along the walls have regular LCD monitors. The computer installed under the conference table is connected to a projector and also connected to a touch-sensitive LCD monitor sketchpad.

Standard office and productivity software, as well as ASDL-specific design tools, are installed on each computer.

LCD Sketchpad

To support the use of manual sketching during meetings, the PC under the conference table is equipped with an LCD sketchpad (“Sympodium”).

Projectors

Several projectors are installed, on the conference table and at the SMART Boards. The screen content of every CoDE computer can be projected using VNC software.

SMART Boards

A SMART Board is a touch-sensitive white board/projection surface, which is combined with a standard computer and computer projector, and is supported by associated software tools. It allows the user to interact with a computer desktop and any applications while standing in front of an audience, using the SMART Board’s pens or just fingertips. Interaction includes marker and eraser capabilities, writing typing and drawing, capturing and saving data, and presentation aids.

Currently the CoDE is equipped with two front-projection SMART Boards. The one at the front of the room is a standard one-projector system. One uses two projectors for a “virtual rear projection” capability, where even if part of the projection is shaded by the body of the presenter standing in front of the SMART Board, the other projector can fill in the picture.

The main team work area also contains a Sympodium touch screen. The image of the computer feeding into the Sympodium is projected onto the main projection screen.

The SMART Board software not only enables the use of the boards but also provides a variety of useful resources and applications to enhance a presentation, interactive meeting or design exercise.

Printers

Currently there is one black and white, double-sided laser printer installed. There also is a HP laser multifunction printer that doubles as a copy machine, fax and scanner.

Teleconferencing Phone

A wireless teleconferencing phone is provided. Two remote microphones can be attached to improve audio coverage if needed.

Filing Cabinets

Filing cabinets help project teams keep their papers and documents organized and serve as a long-term repository of information on each project.
