Dr. Michael Balchanos is a Senior Research Engineer with the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering, where he serves under the Digital Engineering and Defense & Space Divisions at the Aerospace Systems Design Laboratory (ASDL). His areas of expertise include research work in dynamic systems modeling and simulation methods in support of digital twin-enabled applications. Moreover, he has been investigating SoS-level integration techniques for enabling decision support in complex and resilient systems design, involving several applications such as smart energy infrastructures, electric reconfigurable naval ships, and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Besides terrestrial applications, he has also been applying similar techniques for cislunar space application, mostly focusing on modeling of lunar surface systems (e.g., habitats, ISRUs, sustainable use of resources). He has also been developing similar methods for Electric Vehicle (EV) energy-based sizing and optimization applications, as well as the development of SoS-level frameworks for the connected autonomous mobility ecosystem of the future. More recently, he has been invested in supporting the development of data-driven, lifecycle-focused vehicle sizing, design, and certification-by-analysis methods, utilizing advanced multi-disciplinary M&S methods and tools, in the form of Digital Twin and Digital Thread applications. He obtained his Diploma in Physics from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Tech.
